TABC Certification: What It Is and How It Works

How Texas TABC certification works: Texas TABC seller/server certification is training offered through TABC-approved seller/server schools. We offer online TABC seller training and a path to seller/server certification. We are not the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. For current rules, Safe Harbor, and Certificate Inquiry, see the official TABC certification pages.

TABC seller/server certification is the Texas training path for people who sell, serve, dispense, or deliver alcoholic beverages, and for many of their immediate managers. The course teaches Texas alcohol laws and intervention techniques aimed at preventing sales to minors and intoxicated customers.

Official hub: TABC Certification.

What seller/server certification covers

Public TABC materials describe seller/server courses as covering:

  • Laws and rules for responsible alcoholic beverage sales and service in Texas
  • Intervention techniques to help prevent sales to minors
  • Intervention techniques related to intoxicated customers

Exact lesson order depends on the school and course software you use. Schools on the TABC-approved list teach to the commission standard curriculum.

Validity (2 years)

Public TABC FAQs state that seller training certification is valid for two years from the date it is issued. That is a general TABC program fact, not a special offer from this site. When it expires, you take an approved seller/server course again. Guide: renew TABC.

Certificate inquiry

Employers and workers can look up status in the official TABC Certificate Inquiry system. You typically need Social Security number and date of birth as directed on that page. Public TABC guidance notes that certificates appear in the system after the school uploads trainee information (schools have a limited number of days to upload; allow time before assuming something is wrong).

Path to a certificate

  1. Take a seller/server course through a TABC-approved school path
  2. Pass the course exam
  3. Receive your certificate from the course provider path
  4. Confirm status later in Certificate Inquiry

FAQs

Is this the same as a liquor license?

No. Seller/server certification is training for people who sell or serve alcohol. A retailer's liquor license or permit is a separate business authorization from TABC.

What about delivery drivers?

TABC also describes Texas Responsible Alcohol Delivery (TRAD) certification for consumer delivery. That is a related but separate product. This site focuses on seller/server certification.

What about the opioid overdose course?

TABC offers a separate Opioid-Related Drug Overdose Course for certain permit holders and staff. It is not a substitute for seller/server certification. See TABC Education on tabc.texas.gov.
